Projet

Access to digital technology has changed life in Africa, whether for young people in urban areas, in the most remote villages of Africa (e.g. agro-pastoral farmers who get information on the climate or diseases for their herd), in the management of payments and access to bank credits. The social link created by digital technology is immense.

Furthermore, with 87% of the world’s school population affected by the closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the international community, led by UNESCO, launched a “Global Coalition for Education” in March 2020 to help States develop the best approaches to ensure educational continuity. Among the avenues most explored to ensure educational continuity, distance teaching and learning solutions figure prominently. These solutions make it possible to reach a critical mass of disadvantaged children and young people, as well as children, young people and even adults who have dropped out of school and want to learn or improve their skills.

Aware of the current situation through which the educational systems are passing and of the opportunities mentioned above, IDAY-International, in collaboration with IDAY-Senegal, agrees with the Academies of the South-East and the South-West of Senegal to reinforce the technical capacities of the actors of the primary school and the way to teach instrumental, socio-affective, economic and technical skills through videos. This will contribute to giving equal access to quality education to a diversity of students, including those living in disadvantaged areas, school dropouts or in employment.

Senegal, like other sub-Saharan African countries, is committed to a policy aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. In this regard, the State is multiplying initiatives in the field of ICT in education. It is supported in this area by technical and financial partners, international organizations, civil society, the private sector, etc.

In this context conducive to the development of digital technology in Senegal, there is a great lack of training for teachers in the use of digital technology to teach at a distance, particularly during pandemics such as COVID-19.

The number of young people dropping out of school is significant and distance learning is an essential response to making education accessible to all.

In addition, young people and teachers are significantly behind in mathematics, which is the basis for a whole range of future skills. Educators agree that it is in CM1, the preparatory level for the Certificate of Primary and Elementary Studies (CFEE), that the basic concepts must be acquired.

Objectifs

General
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of education in Senegal.

Spécifiques
The specific objective of this project is to strengthen the V-Learning devices set up by the educational authorities to ensure pedagogical continuity and improve teachers’ skills in teaching mathematics in the fourth grade.

Résultats attendus

> A guide on the video production process related to the mathematical skills of the CM1 levels is developed and validated.

> A guide on how to teach mathematical skills in the fourth grade via videos is developed and validated.

> One hundred fourth grade teachers have acquired concepts and skills related to the process of producing and teaching videos in mathematics.

> A functional system of monitoring and evaluation, both face-to-face and virtual, has been set up and the good practices have been widely disseminated through social networks and on the websites of IDAY-International, SEN INNOVATIONS, the Ministry of Education and the partner organizations.
