Project

There are many street children in Togo. There are more than 3,000 of them living in Lomé in very difficult conditions. The causes of this phenomenon are multiple. Family separation due to divorce and the death of one or both parents are the main factors. In addition, there is the precarious economic situation of the families and the crisis of the educational system. These children have no protection and are left to their own devices. To ensure their daily survival, they are forced to engage in begging, stealing, door-to-door work and prostitution. The majority of them end up in prison.

Due to a lack of resources, they stay there for a long time, in very precarious conditions of detention. Many of these children in conflict with the law, once in a post-prison situation, return to prison because they are not really reintegrated on a socio-professional level, i.e. they are neither in school nor in training. They are stigmatized in their social environment and no longer enjoy their civil rights.

Aware of the fact that the reintegration of children in conflict with the law starts from the first day of incarceration, ANGE, through this project, intends to carry out actions in favor of children in conflict with the law by accompanying them in the legal and judicial procedures before the juvenile court, and to facilitate their post-custody socio-professional reintegration.

The project aims to provide legal assistance to 50 children in conflict with the law between the ages of 14 and 17, in order to facilitate their release. Once released, they will benefit from follow-up and post-custody support to facilitate their reintegration into school and work. Awareness will be raised in the communities for community leaders on the respect of children’s rights.
