Example 2 – National
Respect for children’s rights
Countries: Democratic Republic of the Congo
Total cost: 26.000 € (2018-2020)
In 2018, IDAY-Kivu received an amount of 24.000€ from a private foundation to reinforce the capacities of 20 youth clubs called “Respect for the rights of the child”. Those school clubs are aiming at ensuring respect of young people rights and protecting them from abuse of power by certain teachers and school officials in primary and secondary schools in Uvira, South Kivu (DRC). An NGO member of IDAY-Kivu, specialized in children’s rights, held training for school principals, teachers, representatives of parents’ committees, representatives of the police brigade and local representatives of the Ministry of Education. They then organized, by vote, the nomination of the pupils representing the 20 school clubs (10 boys/10 girls), trained them on the management of a club and on the existing legal obligations regarding children’s rights. All clubs then conducted awareness-raising activities in their schools and communities (for instance, an inter-schools football tournament was organized).
On the 2018-2020 period, and without any additional external funding, it is no less than 26 new schools that joined the initiative, including schools from other cities (Baraka, Bukavu, Kalemie).
